What is a liposuction compensation claim?

Liposuction is a common type of cosmetic surgery that is done to remove unwanted fat from specific parts of the body.

The procedure is usually done on the tummy and thigh areas, as well as smaller areas of the body, such as the neck and upper chest. It is not typically carried out for general weight loss.

Although the procedure is usually performed without any issues, sometimes cosmetic surgery negligence causes the surgery to go wrong – resulting in a so-called botched surgery.

According to The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, this type of cosmetic surgery was the sixth most popular in 2021, with 1,275 people having the procedure done.

A surgeon or medical professional has a duty of care to uphold when they are providing your care, and if they don’t uphold this it is classed as medical negligence.

If negligence has caused you any health issues or injuries, then you may be entitled to begin a liposuction compensation claim.

What could go wrong with liposuction treatment?

Though liposuction generally safe, it isn’t without its risks. Some of the complications associated with liposuction include:

  • Allergic reactions to tapes or stitches
  • Asymmetrical stitching which may need further surgery
  • Bad reaction to anaesthesia
  • Bleeding under the skin (haematoma)
  • Blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism)
  • Build-up of fluid
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Fluid escaping from the incision
  • Heavy bleeding from the surgery area
  • Infections
  • Inflammation of the veins
  • Long-term or permanent scarring
  • Lumps on the skin
  • Numbness in the surgery area
  • Skin discolouration
  • Swelling or bruising in the surgery area

Although these issues can be unavoidable, medical negligence could be the reason for suffering a liposuction complication.

What are the signs my liposuction surgery has gone wrong?

All surgical procedures have a recovery period, so you will usually have to wait until the inflammation and scarring have subsided to see any change.

However, your surgery may not have been successful. Your medical team should have made you aware that things can go wrong during operations and that liposuction comes with risks. You may experience:

  • Bumpy and asymmetrical skin where the fat has been removed
  • Damage to any internal organs
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Excessive scarring
  • Irregular body shape or contour deformity
  • Nerve damage

It’s important to remember that this isn’t always a sign you’ve experienced medical negligence. To make a medical negligence claim, you’ll need to show that your team provided substandard care and that a competent surgical team would not have acted that way.

If you aren’t sure whether you could make a compensation claim, just give us a call.

Your action could get you justice and help keep others safe.

How much compensation can I claim?

We know that money isn’t everything and won’t reverse the suffering that has been caused, but the compensation you receive can help pay for any medical costs that may have built up.

If your claim is successful, your compensation will include general damages, which cover the pain and suffering you have been through.

Special damages can also be claimed to compensate you for any lost wages if you’ve been unable to work, as well as any other financial impact the negligence has caused.

If you want to know what you could be entitled to, try our handy compensation calculator.

The exact amount of compensation you could receive depends on how severe your injury is and how much suffering you have been through. For example, if you suffer any injuries to your organs as a result of a botched liposuction procedure, you could claim over £100,000 in compensation.
